Indonesia and Norway Extend Partnership to Reduce Deforestation

Jakarta, February 19, 2025 – The Government of Indonesia and the Kingdom of Norway have agreed to extend their climate and forest cooperation under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) until 2030.

The announcement was made today during a Ministerial Dialogue held in Jakarta, followed by a press conference with Raja Juli Antoni, Indonesia’s Minister of Forestry; Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, Indonesia’s Minister of Environment; and Norway’s Minister of Climate and Environment, Andreas Bjelland Eriksen.

The MoU supports Indonesia’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from Forestry and Other Land Use (FOLU) signed in September 2022. The extension of this collaboration strengthens the long-standing partnership, reinforcing both nations’ commitment to achieving ambitious climate targets within the forestry and land-use sectors.

“Indonesia is committed to achieving its FOLU Net Sink 2030 through multiple avenues of efforts and collaboration. We welcome the extension of our partnership with Norway as one key strategy to realize our targets. This partnership is a great opportunity not only to reduce emissions but also to promote biodiversity, support local communities, and foster economic resilience through sustainable and inclusive approaches.”, said Raja Juli Antoni, Indonesia’s Minister of Forestry.

Norway’s long-term commitment

The Norwegian Minister of Climate and Environment, Andreas Bjelland Eriksen, expressed Norway’s appreciation for Indonesia’s leadership in tackling deforestation and its critical role in global climate action.

“Norway is honored to continue our work alongside Indonesia as a key partner in fighting climate change and safeguarding biodiversity. This extension reaffirms our long-term commitment to supporting Indonesia’s efforts to protect its forests and the global climate for future generations,” said Minister Eriksen.

Result based partnership

Norway has so far contributed $216 million for Indonesia’s verified results in reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation.

Norway’s result-based contributions directly supports Indonesia’s Forest and Land Use (FOLU) Net Sink 2030 Operational Plan, which is managed by the Indonesian Government through the Indonesian Environment Fund (IEF). The IEF, launched in 2019, is an essential mechanism for Indonesia’s climate action, assisting in the achievement of the country’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction targets and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Indonesian Environment fund already collaborates with key partners such as the World Bank and UNDP, in addition to Norway.
