Peru has the world’s fourth largest intact rainforest. Deforestation has been relatively low but shows signs of increase, largely driven by small-scale agriculture and migration from the Andes mountains into the rainforest. Peru has a major problem with illegal logging (forest degradation).

The COP26 Presidency is inviting world leaders to come together at COP27 to establish a new Partnership, which will accelerate implementation of the unprecedented commitment made at COP26 by over 140 countries to halt and reverse forest loss and land degradation, whilst delivering sustainable development and promoting an inclusive rural transformation.
The Amazon Fund is re-activated
At his first day in office, President Luiz Inácio “Lula” da Silva reaffirmed the incoming government’s ambitions to halt deforestation, and he took the necessary steps to reopen the Amazon Fund.
Peru reaching key milestones in rainforest protection
Peru has stepped up efforts to reduce deforestation in the Amazon through the major international forest and climate alliance with Germany, Norway, the UK, and the US. Important progress has been made on the expansion of protected areas and indigenous reserves and putting in place important policy and monitoring instruments. Norway announces a payment of USD 10 million to Peru as part of the existing climate and forest partnership for achieved policy milestones.

Peru strengthens powerful partnership in its fight to preserve the Amazon rainforest
As part of a major international climate alliance, Peru, Germany, Norway, UK and the US are stepping up efforts to reduce deforestation in the Peruvian Amazon by 2025. Peru holds the fourth largest tropical forest in the world, an area almost twice the size of Germany.

Indonesia
Indonesia is the world´s third largest rainforest country. Scattered on thousands of large and small island it is not one, but many rainforests. It´s not one, but several ecosystems. For many years, a rapidly developing economy and a growing population has led to extensive deforestation. But new reforms and committed actions by Indonesias government, firmly backed by Norway, seem to have turned the trend of deforestation.
Ecuador
Ecuador’s Amazon Rainforest is regarded as the most species-rich section of Amazonia. Deforestation has been rediuced over the last years compared to historical levels.
In 2018, Norway, Germany and Ecuador entered into a performance-based agreement for the payment of emission reductions from forest in Ecuador through the German REDD Early Movers program.
